Have you ever watched a young child move around on the ground and at play and thought: "I used to do that". They get up and down from the ground without using their hands, can roll freely, stay in a squat for ages, sit in all sorts of wonderfully crazy positions and move with total freedom between positions.
Why do you think you can't do that anymore?
If you think age is an excuse, think again. We've all seen dancers and some particularly skilled athletes move with a grace and control that makes us wish we had their natural ability. Well, guess what? We do! We just have to find our inner child!
Most gyms today teach you to lift weights and work out on cardio machines, which do nothing to improve your overall flexibility or reduce stress and tension.
At Healthscape we're interested in improving your mobility and flexibility and seeing your movement become fluid and graceful.
The difference between people that move well and those that don't is their ability to feel their body move, to feel patterns of tightness in their bodies and to work with that tightness to overcome any restrictions of movement.
At Healthscape we teach you to work with your own body, to improve your movement and, at the same time, reduce your tension. We use a mix of traditional Russian movement techniques as well as methods such as Yoga, Feldenkrais and some modern stretching applications to help you achieve this.
To move well you need to stop thinking about individual muscles and start thinking about how everything works together throughout your body. Muscles don't work individually. In fact, we shouldn't be thinking about muscles at all. Rather, we should be thinking about the tissue that connects them all together, the tissue that runs throughout your entire body, including around your organs, nerves and bones, the tissue that envelops everything - the fascia.
Most injuries occur in areas where we carry excess tension. If you're feeling stiff and sore, these areas are the most prone to injury. So learning where your tension patterns are and working on them will reduce your likelihood of injury and pain. It will also help you to work out why those patterns were there to begin with.
If your goal is to move better and increase your strength and fitness, we can show you how to do this without creating tension that will lead to problems later in life. We can help you to create functional strength like that of a gymnast or dancer, rather that limited strength that is useful only for lifting weights.
So, stop "feeling your age" and give us a call.
